Connecticut's Jr. PG Renee Montgomery and So. C Tina Charles are among the 12 finalists for the 2007-08 State Farm Wade Trophy announced today by the WBCA. Noticably absent from the final list of 12 is UConn's phenom freshman Maya Moore who is not eligible for the award based solely on the fact that she is a freshman. I would love to see that be the case in men's college basketball for a National POTY award and the kind of controversy that would raise, but it's only women's college basketball so we brush it under the rug (STUPID RULE....WBCA....REALLY STUPID!!!!). She is still eligible for the 2007-08 State Farm (formerly Kodak) All America Team though.
The 12 Finalists:
Matee Ajavon, Rutgers
Essence Carson, Rutgers
Tina Charles, Connecticut
Sylvia Fowles, LSU
Crystal Langhorne, Maryland
Erlana Larkins, North Carolina
Angel McCoughtry, Louisville
Renee Montgomery, Connecticut
Courtney Paris, Oklahoma
Candace Parker, Tennessee
Kristi Toliver, Maryland

Moore was named Big East Freshman of the Week today for the Big East record 10th time this season after averaging 21.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.7 bpg, and 2.3 spg while helping UConn to a 3-0 record for the week (2-0 vs. Top 5)...BUT this time she was also named....Big East Player of the Week becoming the FIRST EVER freshman to take such honors on the women's side and becoming the the 1st male or female freshman to sweep both weekly awards.
The million dollar question will be answered this Friday at the Big East awards banquet...has she done enough to convince the other coaches in the Big East that she is the BEST Player (not just Freshman) in the Big East and should win the 2007-08 Big East Player of the Year award.
My list is down to TWO:
1. Maya Moore, UConn OR
2. Angel McCoughtry, Louisville
