Today the 2011-12 Preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll was released and UConn is ranked 4th (received two 1st place votes). Last week the 2011-12 Preseason AP Poll came out and UConn was also ranked 4th by the 40 national media member voters. The Baylor Lady Bears were picked 1st in both polls followed by Notre Dame 2nd and Tennessee 3rd while Stanford rounded out the top 5 in both polls in 5th.

The 2011-12 Preseason AP All-America Team was also announced today led by unianimous selection Baylor Jr. C Brittney Griner (40 votes). Joining Griner on the 5-member team is Stanford Sr. F Nnemkadi Ogwumike (37 votes), Notre Dame Jr. G Skylar Diggins (37 votes), Miami Sr. G Shenise Johnson (25 votes), and Tennessee Sr. W Shekinna Stricklen (21 votes). UConn Sr. G Tiffany Hayes and So. C Stefanie Dolson were named as 2011-12 Preseason AP All-America Honorable Mentions.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were picked to win 2011-12 Big East Conference Regular Season Title in a poll voted on by the league coaches today at Big East Media Day in NYC. For only the second time since the 1992-93 season the Huskies were not selected as the favorite in the Big East. Notre Dame narrowly edged out UConn as the favorite with 219pts. to UConn's 216. The other time was in 2005-06 when Rutgers was picked to finish first in the Big East. Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins was unanimously selected as the 2011-12 Preseason Big East POTY while Connecticut's Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was picked as the 2011-12 Preseason Big East FOTY. Due to a tie in voting, 12 players were named to the 2011-12 Preseason All Big East Team including Connecticut's Tiffany Hayes and Bria Hartley.

Today Coach John Wooden’s daughter, Nan Wooden, announced at the annual Wooden Award preseason tipoff luncheon that UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma will be presented with the 2012 John R. Wodden Legends of Coaching Award this coming April. Auriemma ranks as one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, with seven national titles, 12 Final Fours and four undefeated seasons, including 39-0 NCAA title-producing campaigns in 2009 and 2010. His all-time coaching record is 771-124 (.861/26 yrs), tops among active NCAA coaches and No. 2 all-time in win percentage. His all-time record in the NCAA tournament is an astounding 81-16 (.835/24 yrs.). Since Geno Auriemma arrived at UConn, all players who have exhausted their eligibility have graduated. He will coach the U.S. Olympic team next summer in London. UConn’s men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun was the Legends of Coaching winner in 2005; Connecticut is the only school with two recipients. Auriemma has coached the last three John R. Wooden Award women’s winners, Maya Moore (2009 and 2011) and Tina Charles (2010). Auriemma and Coach Wooden became linked in fans’ minds last year when Coach Wooden’s grandson, Greg Wooden, was on hand as the Huskies broke the Wooden-led UCLA consecutive win streak at 88 last December.

Today the UConn trio of Sr. G Tiffany Hayes, So. C Stefanie Dolson, and So G Bria Hartley were named to the 2011-12 John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-30 list. For the last 3 seasons a UConn players has won the Wooden Award (Maya Moore in '09 & '11 and Tina Charles in '10). UConn leads the way along with Notre Dame by having 3 players named to the list and the Big East leads all conferences with a total of 9 players.

to former UConn Stars Maya Moore and Charde Houston and the 2011 WNBA Champion Minnesota Lynx!!! Today they defeated the Atlanta Dream, 73-67 to sweep the WNBA Finals 3-0 en route to their franchises first-ever WNBA Title. Maya finished the game with 15p, 7r, 2a, and 1s in 28mins. while Charde did not play. Former LSU Star Seimone Augustus took home Finals MVP honors after averaging 24ppg in the series.

Today the UConn women's basketball team, in partnership with Row27, has launched UConnWBB.com, an brand new interactive microsite that tells the story of UConn women's basketball. The site is heavily photo and video driven and is another avenue by which fans can follow the storied program. UConn men's and women's basketball programs will tip-off the 2011-12 season with First Night sponsored by People's United Bank on Friday, October 14th at Gampel Pavilion. Admission is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6 p.m. featuring an autograph session with both teams, followed by performances from the band, cheer and dance squads, introductions of the players and coaches, a dunk and three-point contest and ultimate prize giveaways. The show will end at approximately at 8 p.m. with a performance by the famous Simon Sez. There will also be surprise guest appearances by former UConn basketball greats.

Today the former UConn Great and current Minnesota Lynx starting Wing was named the 2011 WNBA Rookie of the Year. She recieved 38 out of the 40 possible votes. She becomes the third former Husky to win (Diana Taurasi, 2004 and Tina Charles, 2010). She was also unianimously voted to the 2011 WNBA All-Rookie Team by the league's head coaches.

Today former UConn 4-time All-American Maya Moore was named one of 30 finalists for the 2011 NCAA Woman of the Year award.The finalists have been chosen by a selection committee of representatives from various NCAA schools and conferences. This year a record 471 nominations were submitted for the award that will be presented later this fall. The Woman of the Year Award, now in its 21st year, honors female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academic achievement, athletic excellence, community service and leadership. The prestigious program also involves a community service initiative that gives honorees the opportunity to interact with each other and with young girls in the city of Indianapolis who look to them as role models. Every NCAA member institution is encouraged to honor its top graduating female student-athlete by submitting her name for consideration. Each conference assesses the eligibility of its members’ nominees and selects at least one student-athlete to represent the conference. To be eligible for the award, a female student-athlete must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2011 spring season, graduated no later than the end of the summer 2011 term and achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5. The NCAA recently honored 142 women representing NCAA athletic conferences and independent schools for their accomplishments. The selection committee will now narrow the Top 30 to three finalists from each division to form the Top Nine, which will be announced in early September. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will select the national winner from the Top Nine honorees. The 2011 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced during the Woman of the Year dinner in Indianapolis on Oct. 16.

The new look Huskies left today for their 10-day European Tour. They will play four games and do lots of sightseeing around Italy. Good luck and safe travels, girls (and guys)!!!! The one negative: Doty will continue to practice (as she recovers from knee surgery/recent knee sprain), but won't play in any of the games.

UConn will open the competition portion of their trip Thursday against the Dutch National Team in Rome (1:30 p.m. EDT). The Huskies will also meet the Italian Select team in Rome Friday (1:30 p.m.); the Saarlouis Royales in Florence Aug. 22 (noon); and the Nigeria National Team in Como Aug. 24 (TBA).

Not only is she the best female athlete in ALL of collegiate sports, she is also the smartest athlete no matter what gender!!!

Today former UConn Great Maya Moore was named the 2010-11 Capitol One Academic All-American of the Year for ALL Division I sports (male and female). One of the greatest women's basketball players in NCAA history, Moore was selected as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for the University Division. She joins Rebecca Lobo, '95 as the second women's basketball player from UConn to be named as the Academic All-America of the Year for the University Division. She is also the fourth women's basketball player (Ruth Riley, '01 of Notre Dame and Stacey Dales-Schuman, '02 of Oklahoma). Moore, who graduated with a Sports Media and Promotion major and a 3.67 G.P.A., was the Academic All-America of the Year for women's basketball in the University Division as a junior and senior. When she repeated as the Academic All-America of the Year, she became the first University Division women's basketball player to repeat as Academic All-America of the Year. A three-time Capital One Academic All-America selection, she finished her illustrious career as the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA Division I history with 3,036 points. A four-time WBCA All-American first team selection, she led the University of Connecticut to a pair of national championships and four appearances in the NCAA Final Four during her career. She played in all 154 games of her college career and led UConn to a phenomenal record of 150-4. Named as the Most Outstanding Performer at the 2010 NCAA Division I Tournament, Moore was the winner of the Wade Trophy as the top women's basketball player in the nation three times. A native of Lawrenceville, Ga. who grew up in Jefferson City, Mo., she was the first freshman to be named as the BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2008. Moore was also named as the BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2009 and 2011. In April, she was selected by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2011 WNBA Draft and just this past month was selected by the fans to start in the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game. In the University Division, there are 12 Academic All-America® teams selected annually - Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track, Men’s and Women’s At Large, Football, Volleyball, Baseball and Softball. In each program, there is an Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year. Those 12 Team Members of the Year are considered for the Academic All-America® of the Year Award. Moore was selected from a field of 12 Scholar-Athletes with an average G.P.A. of 3.89.

USA (U19) Gold!!!

Today UConn So. C Stefanie Dolson and Fr. W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis each scored a game-high 15 points to lead Team USA to a 69-46 victory over Spain in the gold medal game of the FIBA U19 World Championship, which was played in Puerto Montt, Chile. Dolson and UConn So. G Bria Hartley have now won two gold medals (2010 U18 World Championship) while Mosqueda-Lewis has now won three (2010 U17, 2009 U16). Mosqueda-Lewis was 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-6 from long-range. She also snared eight rebounds and dished-out four assists for the red, white and blue. Dolson rounded out a solid tournament with a 5-of-8 performance from the floor and made five of her six free throw attempts. Hartley came into the game as the team’s leading scorer, but scored only three points to go along with three assists. UConn commit F Breanna Stewart led the U.S. in scoring (11.2ppg) and rebounding (7.3rpg) for the tournament and was named to the 2011 U19 World Championship All-Tournament Team. UConn commit F Morgan Tuck was also on the USA squad.

Here is how all 5 faired in the tournament overall (9 games):
* Stewart started 3 games and led the U.S. in scoring (11.2), rebounding (7.3), and blocks (1.7) and averaged 19.9 minutes.
* Hartley started all 9 games and was second on the team in scoring (11.1) and assists (3.2) and averaged 3.1 rebounds and a team-high 1.9 steals in team-high 24.8 minutes. She also shot team-high 43.2 percent (team-high 19-of-44) from 3-point range.
* Dolson started 6 games and averaged 9.2 points on 61.0 percent shooting from the field and 4.4 rebounds in 14.2 minutes.
* Mosqueda-Lewis started 2 games and averaged 7.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists and was 15 of 42 from 3-pt range in 19.6 minutes.
* Tuck started 5 games and averaged 3.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in 14.1 minutes.

Today former UConn women's basketball star Maya Moore has won the 2011 Honda-Broderick Cup for the second straight year as the top female college athlete. Moore, a native of Jefferson City, Missouri who grew up in Lawrenceville, Georgia, has been nominated for the Honda Sports Award for basketball all four years of her college career and won the honor last year. She becomes the 1st-ever player to win the award in back-to-back season and is only the second athlete to be named as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year twice (Tracy Caulkins won in ‘82 and ‘84). Moore led the UConn team to four Final Four appearances, two national titles and a 150-4 record. She is the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA history, with 3,036 points. Honored as the Capital One University Division Academic All-American of the Year and BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011, Moore was also selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2009. A three-time WBCA Wade Trophy honoree and four-time WBCA State Farm First Team All-American, she won the Naismith Trophy, the Associated Press Player of the Year Award and the USBWA Player of the Year Award in 2009 and 2011. Today UConn's trio of So. C Stefanie Dolson, So. G Bria Hartley and Fr. F Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis were named to the 2011 USA Women's U19 World Championship Team as announced by USA Basketball. They are also joined on the team by UConn commits F/C Breanna Stewart and F Morgan Tuck. The 12-member squad will reassemble July 11-15 for training at the USOTC, before the team travels to Chile for its final preparations. As the winner of the past three U19 World Championships, the USA will look to defend its title at the 2011 U19 Worlds, hosted by Chile from July 21-31 in Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas. The USA has been drawn into Group B for preliminary round play and will tip-off against Japan on July 21 (12:30pm ET), face Russia on July 22 (12:30pm ET) and close the first round against Argentina on July 23 (3:30pm ET). The second round will be played July 25-27, quarterfinals are slated for July 29, semifinals will be held on July 30 and the finals are scheduled for July 31.

Today Minnesota Lynx Star and former UConn Great Maya Moore became the 1st ever female basketball player to be signed to an endorsement deal by the Jordan Brand. Recognized as one of the greatest collegiate women’s basketball players to ever play, Moore led the University of Connecticut Huskies to back-to-back NCAA titles in 2009 and 2010. During her tenure at UConn, she re-wrote college basketball’s record books by leading the Huskies to a 150-4 record, including an NCAA Division I basketball record 90-game win streak. Today the Top point guard (and #2 overall player) in the ESPN HoopGurlz Class of 2012 Moriah Jefferson (Glenn Heights, TX) verbally committed to Connecticut. Moriah becomes the 3rd player from the Class of 2012 to commit to the Huskies which already includes the #1 overall player Breanna Stewart (NY) and #12 overall Morgan Tuck (IL). She also becomes UConn first-ever recruit from the state of Texas. Her commitment now gives the Huskies the unprecendented recruiting coup of the Top 2 players (#1 Stewart and #2 Jefferson) from one class for the first time in history. Today UConn 4-time All-American Maya Moore has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in basketball, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in the sport for the second straight year. The Honda Sports Award is given annually to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports, along with automatic eligibility to become a “Top Three’’ finalist for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which signifies the Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year. She edged fellow nominees Brittney Griner of Baylor, Amber Harris of Xavier and Nnemkadi Ogwumike of Stanford in voting done by 1,000 NCAA member schools. Moore and Harris are now teammates with the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. Moore is seeking to repeat as the Honda-Broderick Cup winner, which would make her just the second individual to twice be recognized as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Former Florida swimmer Tracy Caulkins won the award in 1982 and 1984.

Tonight UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore officially became the consensus National Player of the Year for 2010-11 as she was named the winner of the 2011 John R. Wooden Award for women's college basketball's player of the year. She won the award as a sophomore in 2009. Former UConn teammate Tina Charles won the award last season (2010).

Today UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore was named the 2010-11 Naismith Player of the Year for women's college basketball. She becomes the first player in the history of the Naismith Trophy to winner the award twice as a high school athlete (2006 and 2007) and twice as a college athlete (2009 and 2011). Former UConn teammate Tina Charles won the award last season (2010).

Next year wasn't going to be easy without the services of Maya Moore anyway, but now the challenge has been sent. It's time for the surrounding parts of the Moore era to take ownship and decide tonight they are ready for that challenge. There is no more Moore to lean on and players like Tiffany Hayes and Kelly Faris must decide they WANT to lead this team back to the Final 4 and take the championship. Titles aren't handed to anyone and that was shown tonight. Maya Moore's career may be over, but her legacy at UConn and in WCBB will live on forever. Today UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore was named the recipient of the Elite 88 award for the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. The Elite 88, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. It is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 88 championships. Moore, majoring in sports media and promotion, currently carries a 3.669 GPA. The four-time All-American forward was presented with the award Sunday evening during the Women's Final Four at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Today UConn's Sr. Maya Moore was also named the 2010-11 Associated Press Women's National Player of the Year while her head coach Geno Auriemma was named the 2010-11 Associated Press Women's National Co-Coach of the Year. Moore received 37 out of the 39 possible votes and has now won the award for the 2nd time in her career. Auriemma, who shared the award with Stanford's Tara VanDerveer and Miami's Katie Meier as each received 10 votes, has taken home AP Coach of the Year honors seven times, including three times in the last four years.

Today UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore also took home the 2010-11 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award as the most outstanding senior in the Class of 2011. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Moore was recently honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America as the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year. She is involved with Athletes in Action and has attended numerous leadership conferences through the organization. She is also a gifted musician. Moore has been involved with the Children’s Hospital, helping with a teleconference to raise money for sick children as well as visiting children several times. She also volunteered at head coach Geno Auriemma’s charity golf tournament and has helped the Salvation Army.

Without question the "Most Decorated"...

Today UConn Sr. Maya Moore became the most decorated player in the history of NCAA basketball (men's or women's for that matter) as she was named the winner of the prestigious 2011 State Farm Wade Trophy which is the highest honor in women's college basketball for the (record) third time. Moore has posted a 150-3 record at UConn. She has led the Huskies to an NCAA-record 90-game winning streak, four BIG EAST Championships and four NCAA Women's Final Four appearances. Sunday night her team continues its quest for a third national championship in a row, and eighth overall. While averaging 23.4ppg this season (19.7 points per game in her collegiate career), Moore became the Huskies' all-time leading scorer earlier this season and is only the seventh player in NCAA Division I women's basketball history to score at least 3,000 career points. She is one of only two players to be selected as a First Team All-American four times. She won the BIG EAST Player of the Year Award three times and was voted as the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament in 2010. Equally impressive is Moore's performance in the classroom. She recently was named BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Capital One University Division All-American of the Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America for the second-consecutive year. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native who sports a 3.7 GPA in an individualized major of sports media promotion, is a three-time Academic All-America pick.

Summary: Fr. Stefanie Dolson dominated inside with career-high tying 24pts. and 9rebs. while UConn All-American and Tournament MVP Maya Moore added 22p/5r/3a/3s/2b to help UConn fight its way to its 4th straight BET Title with a 73-64 victory over Notre Dame in the Big East Tournament final. The Huskies have now won 17 Big East championships overall. Leading 41-40 early in the second half, UConn went on an 11-0 run to break. Moore, who earned tournament MVP honors for the second time in her stellar career, had three points and two assists during the burst. Moore followed that with a 3-pointer from the corner with 12:44 left to cap the spurt and tie her with Penn State great Kelly Mazzante for ninth place on the career NCAA scoring list with 2,919 points. She ended the game all alone in 9th with 2,921 career points. Moore became only the second two-time MVP of the tournament, joining former UConn great Kara Wolters (1995 and 1996). She is just the second player in conference history to win both the regular season and postseason MVP awards in the same year (Moore also won both awards in 2009 as a sophomore). Shelly Pennefather of Villanova was the only other player to do it (and did it twice as well in 1986 and 1987). It was the Huskies' 81st consecutive victory at home.

Of Note: Even though she earned her 2nd MVP award of the Big East Tournament, Maya Moore would have cast her vote for Fr. Stefanie Dolson, who led the Huskies with 24pts. "I told her she was my MVP," said Moore, who gave Dolson a giant bear hug as the final buzzer sounded. "Just the way she stayed aggressive, stayed confident and finished so well inside for us."

Today UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore was named Big East Player of the Week for a Big East single-season record 8th time. Moore averaged 21ppg, 7.3rpg and 4.3apg, while shooting 52.4 percent from the floor and leading the Huskies to a 3-0 week in the Big East and an undefeated Big East Regular Season Championship for the 3rd straight year. She scored 20 points and dished out five assists against only one turnover in the Huskies' 80-59 victory over Seton Hall on Feb. 22. She also pulled down six rebounds and buried three 3-point field goals against the Pirates. She followed that up with another 20-point effort at No. 18/19 Georgetown on Feb. 26, connecting 8-of-9 from the free throw line and hauling in eight rebounds. She capped the week with a 23-point, eight-rebound effort against Syracuse in her last regular-season home game. Moore made 11-of-13, adding eight rebounds in the 82-47 victory over the Orange. Moore has scored at least 20 points 71 times in her career and has netted double-figure points in all but four of her 146 career games. Moore has tallied the BIG EAST honor eight times this year, surpassing the record that was shared by Nykesha Sales (1997-98) and Angel McCoughtry (2008-09). It was also the 12th time in her career that she has been named the BIG EAST Player of Week, tying Rebecca Lobo and McCoughtry for the most weekly honors in a career.

Summary: On Senior Night, UConn Seniors Lorin Dixon and All-American Maya Moore combined to score 31pts., 8rebs., 10asts., 4stls., 1blk., and only 2 TO's as the NCAA's most successful duo won for the 143rd time in their 146th career game as UConn routed Syracuse 82-47 to clinch its 3rd consecutive and 9th overall undefeated Big East regular season title. UConn All-American candidate Tiffany Hayes added 18 points as the Huskies won their 17th straight game since its lone loss of the season to Stanford on Dec. 30 that snapped the Huskies' record 90-game winning streak.

But the night (as it should have) belonged to Moore...

Before the game, her name and number were unveiled high above the court in the Huskies of Honor section of Gampel Pavilion along with the 12 other UConn women's greats, Geno Auriemma and the 1994-95 and 1999-00 teams. The three-time All-American joined former teammates Renee Montgomery and Tina Charles as the only players to be given that honor while still playing for the Huskies. The other 10 players, which include former stars Rebecca Lobo, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, were enshrined after they were done playing. After having three players honored in the last three seasons, it might be awhile before another Husky is put up there. Moore and senior teammate Lorin Dixon were honored before the game. Moore, who is usually unflappable, was tearing up as the UConn public address announcer read off all she's accomplished in her four years at the school. Every time she seemed ready to break down, her grandfather would pump his fist and she'd crack a smile. She shared a long embrace with Auriemma on the court and blew kisses to the crowd while saying thank you. It won't be Moore's last home game as the Huskies will host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. Moore has made a habit of picking apart Syracuse during her career. She had a career-high 40 points as a sophomore and then scored 38 points and had 20 rebounds against them last season. Tonight she hit 11 of her 13 shots, had the team's first seven points of the second half and moved into 11th on the NCAA career scoring list (2,871), passing Middle Tennessee State great Alysha Clark. UConn has a bye in the Big East tournament until the conference quarterfinals on Sunday (2:30pm tipoff).

Today is a dreadful day. Today is a sad day. Today is a bittersweet day. Today is an exciting day. Today is a happy day. Today is a great day.

Today is HER day.

It might not be the last time we see her play, it might not be the last time she plays on the court at Gampel, it might not be the last time she hits an amazing shot in front of 10,000 plus screaming UConn fans, it might not be the last time she high-fives her teammates after a win, but that does not mean that this extraordinary, young woman and phenomenal basketball player, should not be the center of attention of the entire basketball world, tonight, this her Senior Night!!

Her talents defy explanation, her attributes defy reasoning, her character and qualities defy questioning - she is by far - the most spectular person to don a Connecticut Huskies uniform. She may not have the vocal leadership of Sue Bird or the killer instinct of Diana Taurasi or the dominating, physical presence of Tina Charles or the emotional energy of Shea Ralph or the bad assness of Jennifer Rizzotti, but instead she has a piece of all of them. And that, my fellow readers & UConn fans alike, is exactly what makes her the best player in the history of the UConn program - men's or women's.

It's not the amount of points or the tons of clutch shots in big games or the numerous individual awards or the record number of wins that makes her the best, it is how she carried herself as a daughter, teammate, friend, student, and woman through all of it. She makes the game seem so effortless, yet at the same time shows it great dignity with all the hard work and dedication she puts into it. More players will come (some even just as talented) and more players will go, but none will ever match the legacy she leaves behind. She is a legend.

She makes me proud to call myself a UConn women's basketball fan, a UConn alumni, a former UConn cheerleader,  and even more amazingly, a former Connecticut resident!!! I am in awe of this woman and athlete. She will be with out a single doubt in my mind be the #1 draft pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft this coming April and a member of the U.S. Senior National Team in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. And she will no doubt go on to accomplish bigger and greater things will a member of the Minnesota Lynx and USA squad. Some day, we will mostly likely even hear her name being inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

But no matter what she goes on to accomplish, she will always and forever be a UConn Husky. Tied at the very top with Dee as my favorite Husky.

She IS Magnificant.
She IS Amazing.

She IS Youthful.
She IS Awesome.


She IS a UConn Legend.

UConn signee 6'0 W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (Mater Dei HS, CA) is starting things off right in her quest to prove she is a capable replacement for current UConn legend, Sr. Maya Moore. Today the future Husky was named the 2011 State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year. Mosqueda-Lewis currently is the top-ranked player in the United States according to ESPN HoopGurlz.com, which named her its national high school player of the year in 2010 as a junior. She averages 22ppg and has scored in double figures in all but one of the Monarchs’ 28 games this season and has scored 20 or more points in 20 games, including three games of 30 or more points. Mater Dei (27-1), the defending California Interscholastic Federation Division II state champion, is currently ranked No. 3 nationally by both USA Today and ESPN. She becomes the sixth WBCA High School Player of the Year to sing with UConn joining the list of Elena Delle Donne (2008), Maya Moore (2007), Tina Charles (2006), Ann Strother (2002), and Tamika (Williams) Raymond (1998). However, Delle Donne never played for UConn; transferring to Delaware at the beginning of her freshman season.

Today UConn Sr. All-Everything (on and off the court) Maya Moore was named the 2010-11 Capitol One Academic All-America® of the Year (University Division) for the 2nd-consecutive season and to the 2010-11 Capitol One All-America® First Team (University Division) for the third year in a row. Moore becomes the first ever University Division athlete to win All-America® of the Year honors twice. Last year, Moore was the third UConn women’s basketball player to earn multiple first team Academic All-America® selections, joining Leigh Curl and Rebecca Lobo and the third UConn women’s basketball player to earn Academic All-American of the Year status joining Lobo (1995) and Jennifer Rizzotti (1996). She is an Individualized Major with a 3.70 GPA.

Congratulations Maya, for all your hardwork and dedication on the court and more importantly, in the classroom...you make us UConn fans very proud to call you one of "Our Girls"!!!! Your career is quickly winding down and I hope you savor ever last moment of it because I know I will and so will all of "your" fans.

Even though UConn didn't play tonight they still wrapped up (at least a share of) their 19th Big East Regular Season Championship after DePaul lost to Louisville. UConn leads DePaul and Notre Dame by two games with two games remaining and the Huskies own the tiebreaker against both teams thanks to its victory over DePaul and sweep of the two games against Notre Dame. UConn can secure the outright conference championship with a win Saturday at Georgetown or by winning at home against Syracuse on Monday. UConn will also be the #1 seed in the upcoming Big East Tournament and will receive a bye into the quarterfinals and will play at 2pm on Sunday, March 6th. With a win, UConn would play at 6pm on March 7th in the first of the two semifinals. The Big East final is March 8th at 7pm on ESPN.
