Today UConn Fr. Bria Hartley was named Big East Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this season after averaging 20ppg and shooting 62.5 percent from the field, including 42.9 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, to help lead the Huskies to wins over No. 12/14 Oklahoma and No. 8/8 Notre Dame by an average of 31 points per game. Against Oklahoma, Hartley had 11 points, going 5-of-9 from the floor. In the win against Notre Dame, she had 29 points and five assists, connecting on 10 of her 16 shots, including 5-of-9 from long-range. Against the Irish and also posted a pair of thefts in 37-minutes of action. Hartley registered career highs in points (29), field goals made (10), 3-point field goals made (5), and free throw attempts (6).

Breaking News!!!

Today former UConn Great and current Phoenix/USAB star Diana Taurasi had her provisional doping suspension lifted after a lab retracted its finding that she tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Taurasi and her supporters (including UConn/USAB Head Coach Geno Auriemma) maintained her innocence throughout. She even passed a polygraph test back in January.Taurasi intends to return to the WNBA when the season begins in June. Taurasi not only is free to continue playing in the Turkish basketball league, she also is cleared to participate for the United States at the 2012 London Olympics. She has led the league in scoring the last four seasons and signed a contract extension with the Mercury last August.

Today UConn Fr. Stefanie Dolson was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the 2nd straight week and 2nd time in her career after averaging 15.5ppg and 7.5rpg, shooting 72.2 percent from the floor in a 2-0 week for the Huskies, which included road victories over No. 17/19 West Virginia and Providence. Dolson had 10 points, connecting on 5-of-8 from the floor, nine rebounds and blocked a career-high five shots against WVU. She followed that with 21 points and six rebounds against the Friars. Dolson sank 8-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Her .650 field goal percentage leads the BIG EAST.

Dolson was named the Big East rookie of the week after reaching a career-high with 21 points against DePaul last Saturday. She matched it just a week later. Today UConn swept the Big East weekly honors of the 4th time this season. UConn All-American Maya Moore was named the Big East Player of the Week for a record-tying seventh time this season after leading the Huskies to a 2-0 week for the Huskies while averaging 31.5ppg, 10rpg and 6.5apg while shooting 75.8 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from 3-point range in a week that saw the Huskies defeat two top-10 teams. Moore had 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists against 3/3 Duke. She was 11-of-17 from the floor and made 3 out of 4 from 3-point range. Moore recorded 34 points, 11 rebounds and six assists against 9/13 DePaul. Moore was 14-of-16 from the field against the Blue Demons. Moore, who now leads the country in scoring at 24.5ppg also made nine of her 10 attempts from the charity stripe last week. Moore became the NCAA all-time record-holder with 135 career double-figure scoring games. UConn teammate Fr. Stefanie Dolson was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career after she averaged 14.5ppg and 9.0rpg and shot 72.2 percent from the field to key the Huskies’ two victories over 3/3 Duke and 9/13 DePaul. Dolson had eight point and 12 rebounds against Duke, blocking two shots and dishing out two assists. She followed that up with a 21-point, six-rebound performance in UConn’s victory over DePaul. The 21 points marked a career high and came on 10-of-13 shooting. Dolson’s 63.9 field goal shooting percentage leads the BIG EAST this season.

Today 6'4 F/C Breanna Stewart (North Syracuse, NY), the #1-ranked player in the ESPN HoopGurlz Class of 2012, has orally committed to play for UConn. She narrowed her list from 10 teams in October to three this winter -- Connecticut, Duke and Penn State. However, she has known Storrs was the place for her for more than a week and was making the visit, in part, to make her commitment in person. Her commitment gives Auriemma's program back-to-back recruiting classes with the No. 1 player in the country. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, a teammate of Stewart's with USA Basektball and the top senior in the country, signed a National Letter of Intent with Connecticut in November. Stewart is joined by #12-ranked F Morgan Tuck in UConn's growing Class of 2016.

Today UConn Sr. All-American F Maya Moore was named one of the ten finalists for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for women's college basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. Former UConn great Sue Bird, the only other Husky to take home the honor, won the inaugural Senior Class Award in 2002. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in November. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote once daily for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award here or on the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through March 20. Fan votes will be combined with media and coaches votes to determine the winner. Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner at the Final Four in Indianapolis.

She followed that up with a 28-point, 11-rebound performance in Connecticut’s 66-46 win over Pittsburgh. She dished-out four assists and was 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Moore scored 20 points in the first half on Jan. 22, marking the fifth time this season she has scored at least 20 points in the first half. She is the NCAA’s active scoring leader with 2,628 career points.UConn teammate Fr. Bria Hartley was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the 2nd straight week and fifth time this season after she averaged 12ppg, 4rpg and 6apg. Today UConn All-American Maya Moore was named to the 2010-11 John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 20 list as announced today by The Los Angeles Athletic Club. The list is comprised of 20 student-athletes who, based on this year's individual performance and team records, are the current frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor. Moore, the 2009 Wooden Award winner and a 2008, 2009, 2010 Wooden All American, is looking to become only the second four-time Wooden All American pick after Courtney Paris of Oklahoma accomplished the feat from 2006-09. This season, Moore is averaging 23.9 points (No. 4 nationally), 7.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.5 steals, including a career-high 41 point effort in the Huskies' record-breaking 89th straight win last month. Fellow UConn teammate Tiffany Hayes was on the preseason Top 30 list, but did not make the cut for the midseason Top 20 list.

Summary: Connecticut's record 90-game winning streak in women's basketball ended Thursday night when Stanford outplayed the Huskies from the start in a 71-59 victory at Maples Pavilion - where the Cardinal have their own streak going. Stanford hasn't lost in 52 games at home. The Cardinal took an early 13-point lead, never trailed and didn't let the mighty Huskies back in it after halftime in this one. That the Cardinal won in the rematch shouldn't have been a total surprise. Stanford was unbeatable at home, had given the Huskies fits in past meetings, and UConn came close to losing to then-No. 2 Baylor last month. Jeanette Pohlen hit five 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 31 points for the Cardinal (9-2). Moore couldn't find a rhythm until it was too late, held to 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting.

Today USA Basketball annouced that UConn & USA Women's National Team Head Coach Geno Auriemma has been named one of the co-recipients of the 2010 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year Award along with Duke & USA Men's National Team Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Named the 2009-12 USA Women's National Team head coach in April 2009, Auriemma captured a 9-0 record and a gold-medal finish in his first major international competition as the USA National Team head mentor at the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women Sept. 23 - Oct. 3 in Ostrava and Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Despite finalizing the team just two days before the start of World Championship play and having just one practice together as the official 12-member squad, the USA averaged an impressive 96.2 ppg. and won its games by an average margin of 35.1 points per contest. The USA ranked first in nine and second in seven of the 21 major team statistical categories, including No. 1 rankings in points scored (866), points averaged, scoring margin, field goal percentage (.549), rebounding margin (+18.0), assists (15.3 apg.) and steals (15.9 spg.). Featuring 11 players who scored between 12.0 and 5.1 points per game, the Americans held opponents to an average of just 61.1 points per game and a cold 38.5 shooting percentage overall.

Coincidentally, the win came against Auriemma's good friend, Jim Foster, who gave him his coaching start. Auriemma was an assistant for the girls team under Foster back when both were at Bishop McDevitt High School in Philadelphia. When Foster got the St. Joseph's women's basketball job in 1978-79 he brought along Auriemma as an assistant coach. Neither could have imagined that 35 years later they would be facing each other at MSG with so much at stake. Ohio State's Sr. All-American Jantel Lavender came into the game leading the nation in scoring with 26.6 points a game, but was held to just 14pts. This was the fifth annual Maggie Dixon Classic honoring the former Army women's basketball coach, who died on April 6, 2006, of arrhythmia, likely caused by an enlarged heart.

Summary: UConn All-American Maya Moore made her homecoming with 30 points as the Huskies defeated Georgia Tech, 71-51. Moore returned to the city where she honed her marvelous game. The three-time All-American played in gyms around Atlanta and came to national prominence as a star at suburban Collins Hill High School. When it came time to pick a college, Moore headed north to join the powerhouse of women's college basketball, but UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma made sure to schedule a home-and-home series with Georgia Tech, allowing Moore to play before the home folks her senior year. They came out in droves for the game at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, giving the Yellow Jackets the largest women's crowd (7,325) in school history. Moore's cheering contingent included dozens of fans wearing blue T-shirts that had "Maya's Family & Friends" emblazoned across the front. Her mother, Kathryn, was sitting right behind the UConn bench, waving a blue-and-white pompon. Across the way, a group held up giant placards that spelled "Welcome Home Maya." Freshman Bria Hartley added 15 points to go along with 3a/2s.

Today 6'2 F Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook, IL), ranked 5th and 12th in the H.S. Class of 2012 by BlueStar and ESPN HoopGurlz, respectively, orally committed to play for the Huskies this afternoon, according to her Bolingbrook High Head Coach Tony Smith. She was on hand for First Night at Gampel Pavilion on Oct. 15th. She was also in attendance at the XL Center yesterday to take in the 1 vs. 2 matchup between UConn and Baylor. Tuck, who became the first freshman to be named Illinois Ms. Basketball in 2009, has led #4 Bolingbrook to back-to-back state 4A Titles. She averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds last season after returning from a torn ACL injury. Look for her to move even higher in the recruit rankings if she is able to remain healthy. She chose UConn over Duke, Illinois, and Tennessee and is the first player to commit to the Huskies from the H.S. Class of 2012. Welcome to Storrs, Morgan!!!

Down the stretch, freshman Bria Hartley was the game-changer for the Huskies as she tallied eight of her nine points, hitting two 3-pointers and connecting on a layup in the final 3:56 of the contest. Her second 3-pointer gave UConn a 63-60 lead with just over two minutes to go before Jones' made field goal and then Moore's late jumper. With the game on the line in the final minutes of tonight's contest, Moore hit a jumper in the lane at the 1:16 mark to give UConn a 65-62 lead. Baylor missed its next attempt down the floor but grabbed the rebound to set up a Melissa Jones' layup to bring the Lady Bears to within one. With seven seconds on the clock, Moore missed a jumper as Jones grabbed the rebound but Baylor could not get a shot off before time on the clock expired, giving UConn the one-point victory. Tonight marked the 15th time UConn has played in a game featuring the top-two ranked teams in the Associated Press top-25 poll. With the win, UConn moves to 13-2 all-time in those games and now is 10-1 when ranked #1 in the country in those contests.

Today UConn received its final verbal commitment from the HS Sr. Class of 2011 in 6'3 C Kiah Stokes (Iowa). Stokes announed her decision at a press conference at her high school today choosing UConn over Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, and Tennessee. Her verbal brings UConn's freshman class for 2011 to three which already includes 6'0 W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (CA) and 5'9 G Brianna Banks (GA). Mosqueda-Lewis is the consensus #1 player in the 2011 class while Banks is ranked 13th overall and Stokes is ranked 19th overall by the consensus recruiting sites of ESPN HoopGurlz, Blue Star, and All-Star Girls Report. Today UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore was named one of 30 candidates for the 2011 Lowe's Senior Class Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 women’s finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The winner will be announced sometime in April 2011 around the time of the Final Four.

Today the 2010-11 Preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll was released again UConn is ranked No. 1. The Huskies received 27 out of the 31 possible first-place votes. Last Friday the 2010-11 Preseason AP Poll was released and for the 44th-consecutive week the Huskies are Numero Uno. UConn received 39 out of the 40 possible first-place votes. Get ready for a jam-pack schedule this season, as currently 11 UConn opponents are currently ranked in the Top 18 in both polls. With 6 more teams also receiving votes in either poll (4 of the 6 appeared in both).

Today UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore was named as an unanimous selection to the 2010-11 Preseason AP All-America Team for the second consecutive season. Moore received all 40 media votes and becomes the 2nd player in WCBB history to be selected unanimously to the preseason AP All-America team twice. Moore will look to become only the 2nd player to be named to the AP All-American First Team all four years (joining Oklahoma's Courtney Paris).
