Today UConn Sr. All-American F Maya Moore was named one of the ten finalists for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for women's college basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. Former UConn great Sue Bird, the only other Husky to take home the honor, won the inaugural Senior Class Award in 2002. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in November. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote once daily for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award here or on the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through March 20. Today UConn swept the Big East weekly honors of the 2nd time consecutive week and 3rd time this season (it is a rare becoming a regular feat for UConn players). UConn All-American Maya Moore was named the Big East Player of the Week for the 3rd straight week and sixth time this season after posting a pair of double-doubles in a 2-0 week for the Huskies while averaging 27ppg, 10.5rpg and 3apg. Moore scored 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Huskies’ 83-57 victory over No. 10/11 North Carolina. She was 5-of-6 from the free throw line against the Tar Heels. She followed that up with a 28-point, 11-rebound performance in Connecticut’s 66-46 win over Pittsburgh. She dished-out four assists and was 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Moore scored 20 points in the first half on Jan. 22, marking the fifth time this season she has scored at least 20 points in the first half. She is the NCAA’s active scoring leader with 2,628 career points.UConn teammate Fr. Bria Hartley was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the 2nd straight week and fifth time this season after she averaged 12ppg, 4rpg and 6apg. Hartley started the week with an 11-point, five-rebound, eight-assist effort in UConn’s 83-57 win at No. 10/11 North Carolina on Jan. 17. It's the second time this season that Moore's had the chance to play at the historic arena. The Huskies beat Ohio State on Dec. 19 for their 88th straight win en route to the NCAA-record 90 in a row they won. Moore joked that she'd love another chance to play at the Garden this year. Today UConn All-American Maya Moore was named to the 2010-11 John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 20 list as announced today by The Los Angeles Athletic Club. The list is comprised of 20 student-athletes who, based on this year's individual performance and team records, are the current frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor. Moore, the 2009 Wooden Award winner and a 2008, 2009, 2010 Wooden All American, is looking to become only the second four-time Wooden All American pick after Courtney Paris of Oklahoma accomplished the feat from 2006-09. This season, Moore is averaging 23.9 points (No. 4 nationally), 7.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.5 steals, including a career-high 41 point effort in the Huskies' record-breaking 89th straight win last month. Fellow UConn teammate Tiffany Hayes was on the preseason Top 30 list, but did not make the cut for the midseason Top 20 list. 

Today UConn All-American Maya Moore was named the Big East Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after averaging 23.5ppg, 8.5rpg, 4apg, 1.5spg, and 1bpg while leading UConn to a 2-0 Big East record for the week including a 31-point, eight-rebound performance in the Huskies 79-76 road win at 13/12 Notre Dame. Summary: Connecticut's record 90-game winning streak in women's basketball ended Thursday night when Stanford outplayed the Huskies from the start in a 71-59 victory at Maples Pavilion - where the Cardinal have their own streak going. Stanford hasn't lost in 52 games at home. The Cardinal took an early 13-point lead, never trailed and didn't let the mighty Huskies back in it after halftime in this one. They kept pounding the ball inside and banging the boards. UConn fans accustomed to watching coach Geno Auriemma's team blow past opponents hadn't seen a loss since the 2008 NCAA semifinals - Stanford got the Huskies that time, too, 82-73 in the Final Four at Tampa, Fla. These teams have a bit of a history. Last season, Stanford almost beat Maya Moore and UConn in the national championship game before losing 53-47. That the Cardinal won in the rematch shouldn't have been a total surprise. Stanford was unbeatable at home, had given the Huskies fits in past meetings, and UConn came close to losing to then-No. 2 Baylor last month. Jeanette Pohlen hit five 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 31 points for the Cardinal (9-2). Moore couldn't find a rhythm until it was too late, held to 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting.

Today USA Basketball annouced that UConn & USA Women's National Team Head Coach Geno Auriemma has been named one of the co-recipients of the 2010 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year Award along with Duke & USA Men's National Team Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Named the 2009-12 USA Women's National Team head coach in April 2009, Auriemma captured a 9-0 record and a gold-medal finish in his first major international competition as the USA National Team head mentor at the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women Sept. 23 - Oct. 3 in Ostrava and Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Despite finalizing the team just two days before the start of World Championship play and having just one practice together as the official 12-member squad, the USA averaged an impressive 96.2 ppg. and won its games by an average margin of 35.1 points per contest. The USA ranked first in nine and second in seven of the 21 major team statistical categories, including No. 1 rankings in points scored (866), points averaged, scoring margin, field goal percentage (.549), rebounding margin (+18.0), assists (15.3 apg.) and steals (15.9 spg.). Featuring 11 players who scored between 12.0 and 5.1 points per game, the Americans held opponents to an average of just 61.1 points per game and a cold 38.5 shooting percentage overall.

Auriemma was an assistant for the girls team under Foster back when both were at Bishop McDevitt High School in Philadelphia. When Foster got the St. Joseph's women's basketball job in 1978-79 he brought along Auriemma as an assistant coach. Neither could have imagined that 35 years later they would be facing each other at MSG with so much at stake. Ohio State's Sr. All-American Jantel Lavender came into the game leading the nation in scoring with 26.6 points a game, but was held to just 14pts. This was the fifth annual Maggie Dixon Classic honoring the former Army women's basketball coach, who died on April 6, 2006, of arrhythmia, likely caused by an enlarged heart.

Today 6'2 F Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook, IL), ranked 5th and 12th in the H.S. Class of 2012 by BlueStar and ESPN HoopGurlz, respectively, orally committed to play for the Huskies this afternoon, according to her Bolingbrook High Head Coach Tony Smith. She was on hand for First Night at Gampel Pavilion on Oct. 15th. She was also in attendance at the XL Center yesterday to take in the 1 vs. 2 matchup between UConn and Baylor. Tuck, who became the first freshman to be named Illinois Ms. Basketball in 2009, has led #4 Bolingbrook to back-to-back state 4A Titles. She averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds last season after returning from a torn ACL injury. Look for her to move even higher in the recruit rankings if she is able to remain healthy. With seven seconds on the clock, Moore missed a jumper as Jones grabbed the rebound but Baylor could not get a shot off before time on the clock expired, giving UConn the one-point victory. Tonight marked the 15th time UConn has played in a game featuring the top-two ranked teams in the Associated Press top-25 poll. With the win, UConn moves to 13-2 all-time in those games and now is 10-1 when ranked #1 in the country in those contests.

Today UConn received its final verbal commitment from the HS Sr. Class of 2011 in 6'3 C Kiah Stokes (Iowa). Stokes announed her decision at a press conference at her high school today choosing UConn over Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, and Tennessee. Her verbal brings UConn's freshman class for 2011 to three which already includes 6'0 W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (CA) and 5'9 G Brianna Banks (GA). Mosqueda-Lewis is the consensus #1 player in the 2011 class while Banks is ranked 13th overall and Stokes is ranked 19th overall by the consensus recruiting sites of ESPN HoopGurlz, Blue Star, and All-Star Girls Report. Today UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore was named one of 30 candidates for the 2011 Lowe's Senior Class Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 women’s finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The winner will be announced sometime in April 2011 around the time of the Final Four.

The two-time defending National Champions were picked to win the 2010-11 Big East Conference Regular Season Title in a poll voted on by the league coaches today at Big East Media Day. Connecticut was the unanimous choice by the coaches. Today at the 2010 World Championships the USA Basketball Women's National Team won the gold medal with a 89-69 victory over the host Czech Republic team. The 12-member USA squad coached by UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma was led to victory by former Husky Greats Diana Taurasi (16pts., named to All-World Championship Team), Sue Bird (11pts. and 6asts.), and Tina Charles (13pts. and 10rebs.). Reigning WCBB National Player of the Year and current UConn All-American Maya Moore poured in with 9 pts. off the bench. Former UConn Stars Swin Cash and Asjha Jones chipped in 2pts. and 4pts. respectively. The gold medal finish also entered Cash and Taurasi into an exclusive list of players who have won Olympic and FIBA World Championship gold, a WNBA title and NCAA crown. They join current USA teammate Bird, as well as Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and former Husky Great Kara Wolters as the only U.S. players in history to win all four.

Today USA Basketball announced the 12 player roster who will represent the U.S. at the 2010 FIBA World Championship that will be held Sept. 23 - Oct. 3 in Ostrava and Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The player selections, made by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee, were announced following a two and a half-week training camp that included four exhibition games. Named to the 2010 USA World Championship squad are two-time Olympic gold medalists Sue Bird (Seattle Storm) Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever) and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury); 2008 Olympic gold medalist Sylvia Fowles (Chicago Sky); 2004 Olympic gold medalist Swin Cash (Seattle Storm); as well as top-tier international newcomers Jayne Appel (San Antonio Silver Stars), Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun), Candice Dupree (Phoenix Mercury), Asjha Jones (Connecticut Sun), Angel McCoughtry (Atlanta Dream), Maya Moore (University of Connecticut), and Lindsay Whalen (Minnesota Lynx). The team will be coached by University of Connecticut Head Coach Geno Auriemma. Six of his current/former players make up half the squad (Bird, Cash, Charles, Jones, Moore (currently still a Husky), and Taurasi).

Today the WNBA announced the members of the 2010 All-WNBA First and Second Teams. Former UConn National Players of the Year who made the cut were Sue Bird (2nd Team), Tina Charles ((2nd Team), and Diana Taurasi (1st Team). Taurasi and Charles were also named 2010 Peak Performers in Scoring and Rebounding, respectively.

Today the former UConn Great and current Connecticut Sun starting Center was named the 2010 WNBA Rookie of the Year. She becomes the second unianimous pick for the award (Candace Parker, 2008) and the second former Husky to win (Diana Taurasi, 2004). She was also unianimously voted to the 2010 WNBA All-Rookie Team by the league's head coaches along with former UConn teammate and current New York Liberty Guard Kalana Greene.

Attention ALL UConn and CT Sun fans...

Come support the Stars at the Sun on July 10th at Mohegan Sun Arena. The game will be televised LIVE on ESPN at 3:30pm (ET). The USA National Team will play an exhibition game against a team of WNBA Stars in replace of the annual WNBA All-Star game as a warm-up to the 2010 World Championships in September. The 11-member squad will only be a unite for this game and the actual 12-member USA National Team roster for Worlds will be announced at a later date. Named to the USA National Team that will be coached by UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma were 6 (yes that's right...SIX) former/current Huskies. The six Huskies are Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Tina Charles, Renee Montgomery, Maya Moore, and Diana Taurasi.

Making up the rest of the USA National squad is Tamika Catchings, Candice Dupree, Sylvia Fowles, Angel McCoughtry, and Cappie Pondexter. On the WNBA Stars squad (as decided through fan voting) is Jayne Appel, Becky Hammon, Lauren Jackson, Michelle Snow, and Sophia Young. (Bird - top vote getter, Cash, and Taurasi also made up the fan voting Top 10 along with the injured Candace Parker, but were placed on the USA National side because they're members of the USA National Team pool.) In addition to the game, the USA National Team will conduct a training camp from July 7-11 with all available members from the USA National Team pool participating.

Additional USA National Team members confirmed to attend the July training camp are: Seimone Augustus, Shameka Christon, Lindsey Harding, former Husky Asjha Jones, Kara Lawson, and Lindsay Whalen as well as USA National Team hopefuls Jayne Appel, Ebony Hoffman, and Kia Vaughn. USA National Team pool members Alana Beard, Parker, and Candice Wiggins are out for the 2010 WNBA season and will not participate in the training camp or Stars at the Sun game due to injury.

Today is was announced that the UConn Jr. All-American was named the co-winner of the very prestigous 2010 Honda-Broderick Cup which is given to the most outstanding female collegiate athlete in all sports.  Moore becomes the third Husky to win the award (Lobo - '95; Rizzotti - '96). For only the second time in the 34-year history of the Honda-Broderick Cup there was a tie in voting. The best news is that we UConn fans get to watch the best female collegiate athlete again next year!!!

The Huskies visited President Obama and the White House for the 2nd year in a row to celebrate their 2nd straight undefeated season this afternoon. President Obama gushed about how much he thinks of the Huskies saying, "I was telling them Michelle and I work out in the morning -- see, we got a little gym here in the White House -- and we just watch 'SportsCenter,' I know you'll be surprised that we don't watch the news shows. But -- this is really true. You know, during the entire season, I just kept on repeating -- and I truly believe -- this was the best team in all of sports, any sport, any gender, by far."

Today UConn All-American Maya Moore picked up another National Player of the Year award. Moore picked up the 2010 Honda Award for Women's College Basketball and is now eligible for the 2010 Honda-Broderick Cup honoring the Top Female Athlete in all of women's college sports. The 2010 Honda-Broderick Cup winner will be announced some time in June.

Today UConn All-American Tina Charles won the prestigous 2010 John R. Wooden Award edging out last year's winner and UConn teammate Moore by one point (the closest margin ever). Both Charles and Moore were named to the 2009-10 John R. Wooden All-American Team along with Nebraska's Kelsey Griffin and Stanford's Jayne Appel and Nnemkadi Ogwumike.

The 2009-10 BIG EAST Player of the Year becomes the 5th UConn player to win the Naismith Trophy (Lobo - '95; Bird - '02; Taurasi - '03,'04; Moore - '09).

Today UConn's Sr. C Tina Charles was named the 2009-10 Associated Press Women's National Player of the Year. Charles received 33 out of the 40 possible votes and her UConn teammate Maya Moore finished 2nd in the voting with 4 votes.  Charles becomes the 7th UConn player ever to win the award after a stellar senior year and will have her name hang high above the Gampel Pavilion court in Storrs, Conn., with past winners Rebecca Lobo, Kara Wolters, Diana Taurasi, Jennifer Rizzotti, Moore, and Sue Bird. UConn Head Coach Auriemma finished 2nd in the voting with 10 out of the 40 possible votes (Nebraska Head Coach Connie Yori won the 2009-10 AP National Coach of the Year after receiving 28 votes).

The 2009-10 State Farm All-America Team was announced today as well as the recipient of the prestigious 2010 State Farm Wade Trophy. For the 2nd consecutive season, the winner of the Wade Trophy is UConn's Super Star Maya Moore. She becomes only the third player to ever win the Wade Trophy twice(Nancy Lieberman and Seimone Augustus), which is the highest player of the year honor in women's college basketball. Congratulations Maya, you deserve it!!!
