Today USA Basketball announced the 12 player roster who will represent the U.S. at the 2010 FIBA World Championship that will be held Sept. 23 - Oct. 3 in Ostrava and Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The player selections, made by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee, were announced following a two and a half-week training camp that included four exhibition games. Named to the 2010 USA World Championship squad are two-time Olympic gold medalists Sue Bird (Seattle Storm) Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever) and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury); 2008 Olympic gold medalist Sylvia Fowles (Chicago Sky); 2004 Olympic gold medalist Swin Cash (Seattle Storm); as well as top-tier international newcomers Jayne Appel (San Antonio Silver Stars), Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun), Candice Dupree (Phoenix Mercury), Asjha Jones (Connecticut Sun), Angel McCoughtry (Atlanta Dream), Maya Moore (University of Connecticut), and Lindsay Whalen (Minnesota Lynx). The team will be coached by University of Connecticut Head Coach Geno Auriemma. Six of his current/former players make up half the squad (Bird, Cash, Charles, Jones, Moore (currently still a Husky), and Taurasi).

Today the WNBA announced the members of the 2010 All-WNBA First and Second Teams. Former UConn National Players of the Year who made the cut were Sue Bird (2nd Team), Tina Charles ((2nd Team), and Diana Taurasi (1st Team). Taurasi and Charles were also named 2010 Peak Performers in Scoring and Rebounding, respectively.

Today the former UConn Great and current Connecticut Sun starting Center was named the 2010 WNBA Rookie of the Year. She becomes the second unianimous pick for the award (Candace Parker, 2008) and the second former Husky to win (Diana Taurasi, 2004). She was also unianimously voted to the 2010 WNBA All-Rookie Team by the league's head coaches along with former UConn teammate and current New York Liberty Guard Kalana Greene.

Attention ALL UConn and CT Sun fans...

Come support the Stars at the Sun on July 10th at Mohegan Sun Arena. The game will be televised LIVE on ESPN at 3:30pm (ET). The USA National Team will play an exhibition game against a team of WNBA Stars in replace of the annual WNBA All-Star game as a warm-up to the 2010 World Championships in September. The 11-member squad will only be a unite for this game and the actual 12-member USA National Team roster for Worlds will be announced at a later date. Named to the USA National Team that will be coached by UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma were 6 (yes that's right...SIX) former/current Huskies. The six Huskies are Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Tina Charles, Renee Montgomery, Maya Moore, and Diana Taurasi.

Making up the rest of the USA National squad is Tamika Catchings, Candice Dupree, Sylvia Fowles, Angel McCoughtry, and Cappie Pondexter. On the WNBA Stars squad (as decided through fan voting) is Jayne Appel, Becky Hammon, Lauren Jackson, Michelle Snow, and Sophia Young. (Bird - top vote getter, Cash, and Taurasi also made up the fan voting Top 10 along with the injured Candace Parker, but were placed on the USA National side because they're members of the USA National Team pool.) In addition to the game, the USA National Team will conduct a training camp from July 7-11 with all available members from the USA National Team pool participating.

Additional USA National Team members confirmed to attend the July training camp are: Seimone Augustus, Shameka Christon, Lindsey Harding, former Husky Asjha Jones, Kara Lawson, and Lindsay Whalen as well as USA National Team hopefuls Jayne Appel, Ebony Hoffman, and Kia Vaughn. USA National Team pool members Alana Beard, Parker, and Candice Wiggins are out for the 2010 WNBA season and will not participate in the training camp or Stars at the Sun game due to injury.

Today is was announced that the UConn Jr. All-American was named the co-winner of the very prestigous 2010 Honda-Broderick Cup which is given to the most outstanding female collegiate athlete in all sports.  Moore becomes the third Husky to win the award (Lobo - '95; Rizzotti - '96). For only the second time in the 34-year history of the Honda-Broderick Cup there was a tie in voting. The best news is that we UConn fans get to watch the best female collegiate athlete again next year!!!

The Huskies visited President Obama and the White House for the 2nd year in a row to celebrate their 2nd straight undefeated season this afternoon. President Obama gushed about how much he thinks of the Huskies saying, "I was telling them Michelle and I work out in the morning -- see, we got a little gym here in the White House -- and we just watch 'SportsCenter,' I know you'll be surprised that we don't watch the news shows. But -- this is really true. You know, during the entire season, I just kept on repeating -- and I truly believe -- this was the best team in all of sports, any sport, any gender, by far."

Today UConn All-American Maya Moore picked up another National Player of the Year award. Moore picked up the 2010 Honda Award for Women's College Basketball and is now eligible for the 2010 Honda-Broderick Cup honoring the Top Female Athlete in all of women's college sports. The 2010 Honda-Broderick Cup winner will be announced some time in June.

Today UConn All-American Tina Charles won the prestigous 2010 John R. Wooden Award edging out last year's winner and UConn teammate Moore by one point (the closest margin ever). Both Charles and Moore were named to the 2009-10 John R. Wooden All-American Team along with Nebraska's Kelsey Griffin and Stanford's Jayne Appel and Nnemkadi Ogwumike.

Today UConn's Sr. C Tina Charles was named the 2009-10 Associated Press Women's National Player of the Year. Charles received 33 out of the 40 possible votes and her UConn teammate Maya Moore finished 2nd in the voting with 4 votes.  Charles becomes the 7th UConn player ever to win the award after a stellar senior year and will have her name hang high above the Gampel Pavilion court in Storrs, Conn., with past winners Rebecca Lobo, Kara Wolters, Diana Taurasi, Jennifer Rizzotti, Moore, and Sue Bird. UConn Head Coach Auriemma finished 2nd in the voting with 10 out of the 40 possible votes (Nebraska Head Coach Connie Yori won the 2009-10 AP National Coach of the Year after receiving 28 votes).

The 2009-10 State Farm All-America Team was announced today as well as the recipient of the prestigious 2010 State Farm Wade Trophy. For the 2nd consecutive season, the winner of the Wade Trophy is UConn's Super Star Maya Moore. She becomes only the third player to ever win the Wade Trophy twice(Nancy Lieberman and Seimone Augustus), which is the highest player of the year honor in women's college basketball. Congratulations Maya, you deserve it!!!

Naismith Finalists...

Today UConn All-Americans Sr. C Tina Charles and Jr. W Maya Moore are among the four finalists for the 2009-10 Naismith National Player of the Year Trophy. Moore was last year's winner of the prestigous Naismith Award. They are joined by Stanford’s Jayne Appel and Nebraska’s Kelsey Griffin.
Fans will be able to text their votes for the player of their choice by texting “VOTE’’ to 345345 beginning March 21. The voting will end at 11:59 p.m. April 3. Fans are allowed one vote per 24-hour period.

Also, UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma was named one of four finalists for the 2009-10 Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year award. He is joined by Tennessee’s Pat Summitt, Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer and Nebraska’s Connie Yori. Auriemma is looking to win the award for the third straight season and for the seventh time in his 25-year tenure with the Huskies.

Congratulations, UConn! It is quite impressive especially when you think that all 71 victories have been by 10pts. or more and the average margin of victory is 32.5ppg (& over 25.5ppg vs. ranked opponents). This team is just flat out been dominate so far in their quest to play the "perfect" game.

The second half of the 2009-10 Big East Awards (aka the major awards) were announced today at a news conference. The nations #1 and undefeated team almost sweep today's awards. UConn All-Americans Sr. Tina Charles and Jr. Maya Moore were named 2009-10 Big East Player of the Year and 2009-10 Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively. UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma picked up another COTY award as he was again named 2009-10 Big East Coach of the Year.

The U.S. Women's Basketball Senior National Team is starting to look like the UConn All-Stars. Today UConn All-Americans Sr. C Tina Charles and Jr. W Maya Moore were among the 12 players added to the national team pool. Joining them were UConn alums Swin Cash, Asjha Jones and Renee Montgomery. Olympic gold medalists Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird were already part of the national pool, totaling seven of 20 players with Connecticut ties. These 20 players are eligible to be selected to the SNT for the upcoming 2010 World Championships this September in Czech Republic. Alana Beard, Shameka Christon, Candice Dupree, Lindsey Harding, Angel McCoughtry, Lindsay Whalen and Candice Wiggins also were added to the camp roster which already includes Seimone Augustus, Tamika Catchings, Sylvia Fowles, Kara Lawson, Candace Parker, and Cappie Pondexter.

UConn All-American Sr. C Tina Charles was named Big East Player of the Week for the sixth time this season after averaging 18.0ppg, 9.3rpg, and 3.0bpg while helping UConn to a 3-0 week in the Big East and leading the way for UConn against 11/12 Georgetown with season-high 33pts. and 15 rebs. as UConn clinched its 4th straight & 18th overall Big East Regular Season Title. Monday at 6/8 Notre Dame, Charles also became UConn's All-Time Leading Scorer and Rebounder.

2009-10 Big East Regular Season Champions!!!

Summary: Senior Day arrived and this year's Georgetown team played the first 10mins. like it might give the UConn Seniors their first lost on the final home game since the 1992-93 Georgetown team did it back in Feb. 27, 1993 (17 years to the day). Unfortunately for the present team, UConn All-American Tina Charles said, "Not on my Senior Day, not in my house, no way, no how" as the Huskies defeated the Hoyas, 84-62. Charles stole the show once again as she and the five seniors all started the game (1st career start for G Jacquie Fernandes) and went out in style wrapping up their 4th Big East regular season title, having only lost 2 home games in their career (except 5th-yr. Sr. Kalana Greene - 4 total) and compiliing a record-to-date of 136-6 in 4 years.

"The Climb: UConn's Quest for Perfection"

"The Climb" is an ESPNU documentary and a behind-the-scenes look into the 2009-10 University of Connecticut women's basketball team and will premiere on Friday, Feb. 26 on ESPNU at 3:30pm (ET). Friday's airing will be episode one of a four-part series that will offer a unique all-access look at the inner workings of one of the most successful programs in all of college sports. The premiere episode will feature ESPN's College GameDay's visit to Storrs in January, Tina Charles being inducted into the "Huskies of Honor" and segments on the success of the sophomore class and the importance of the play of the bench. Additional episodes are tentatively scheduled to air on ESPNU on March 5, March 19 and April 2. Air times for each date are 3:30 p.m. (ET) and replay at 11:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPNU - but are subject to change.

Today the Superstar (on and off the court) was named the 2009-10 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All America of the Year and to the 2009-10 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All America First Team (for the second year in a row). Moore is the third UConn women’s basketball player to earn multiple first team Academic All-America selections, joining Leigh Curl and Rebecca Lobo and the third UConn women’s basketball player to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America of the Year status joining Lobo (1995) and Jennifer Rizzotti (1996). She is an Individualized Major with a 3.70 GPA.

Summary: It took a few timeouts for the Huskies to get used to the officials letting almost EVERY foul go uncalled, but when they finally adjusted, it was a blowout by halftime. I have never seen so many blatant fouls not get called in one game, especially a UConn-Rutgers match-up. Numerous times Moore and Tina Charles missed lay-ups due to a foul and even had a few made buckets that should have been "And Ones". UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma decided to rest G Caroline Doty and replaced her with freshman G Kelly Faris who turned up the heat quite nicely on defense. The UConn backcourt combined to hold Rutgers' leading scorer Sr. G Brittany Ray to just 3pts. on 1-11 FG shooting (0-5 from 3 and 1-2 from the FT line).

Native Philly-girl and UConn Sr. F Meghan Gardler made her first career start in front of her hometown family and friends and finished with 6p/3r/1s in 24mins. Summary: Well Duke hung tough the longest, but in the end UConn just shot the ball way to well for Duke's defense to keep them in it until the end. The Huskies hit more 3's (13) than in their last three games combined (9 total) as they won going away at Cameron Indoor against the #6/7 Blue Devils, 81-48. It was another blowout over a Top 10 team lead by the entire UConn starting 5, who all scored in double figures. Even with All-Americans Tina Charles and Maya Moore only combining for 12pts. and Moore on the bench in foul trouble in the 1st half, they still led 38-28 thanks to Kalana Greene who finished with 18p/2r/4a/1s/1b in 30mins. UConn's starting backcourt of Tiffany Hayes and Caroline Doty also stepped up big and each hitting three 3's and finishing with 13pts. and combining for 7asts. Kaili McLaren and Lorin Dixon gave them solid minutes off the bench as well. Dixon finished the game on the floor with an "and one" three plus the made FT. Overall, Head Coach Geno Auriemma was very pleased with his team's performance especially their response to his halftime speech challenges. The best win this season (IMO)!!!

...has struck once again. This time (for the second time) to UConn recruit, Montini Catholic High's 6'3 Sr. F Michala Johnson. Johnson will have surgery the second week in February on her torn ACL and minorly damaged meniscus in her right knee. Johnson missed most of her junior season after tearing her ACL in her left knee. Good luck, Michala on a healthy and complete recovery!!

UConn officials announced today that Sr. All-American C Tina Charles will become the 2nd active and 12th overall Husky to be inducted into the Huskies of Honor on Saturday, Feb. 13th when UConn hosts St. John's at Gampel Pavilion.

“Tina’s a great kid who’s the kind of kid you want on your team,’’ UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma said. “She is a great teammate, a super human being who I always thought needed a little bit of a kick in the butt every single day at practice to reach her potential. And hopefully she understands and just by (her Huskies of Honor induction) indicates that whether it was the right thing to do or the wrong thing to do she’s going to get exactly what she came to Connecticut for. And she’s going to go down in history as maybe the leading scorer and the leading rebounder maybe in (team history). So if you ask me would I do it any different I would say, `No.’’’

Congratulations Tina!!! You worked very long and hard and you deserve it, girl!!!

#1 UConn hosts #3 Notre Dame in the first-ever women's ESPN College GameDay and in a showdown of two highly-ranked unbeaten teams. Scheduled to appear as hosts for the live morning show from Storrs are ESPN personalities Rece Davis, Digger Phelps, Jay Bilas, Hubert Davis and Doris Burke. Admission and parking (in the South Garage adjacent to Gampel Pavilion) to this event will be free to all fans. The event will include contests, prizes, giveaways and entertainment for fans of all ages. In addition, the first 750 fans in attendance will receive a free GameDay t-shirt.

Summary: After playing there best game of the season, the Huskies followed up their magnificent performance against UNC with their worst performance of the season on the road against Marquette. All-American Tina Charles dominated once again scoring as many points as Marquette's entire team in the 1st half to led UConn to the rugged victory over the Golden Eagles, 68-43. UConn is now all alone in 2nd place in consecutive wins with 55-straight victories behind UConn's record 70-straight from 2001-03.

UConn's Dynamic Duo of All-Americans were named to the 2009-10 John Wooden Award Midseason Top 20 list today. Sr. C Tina Charles and last year's Wooden Award winner, Jr. W Maya Moore headline the list of 20 candidates who will vie for this year's prestigous award honoring the college basketball legend John R. Wooden. Players not on the midseason list are still eligible for consideration on the final ballot which will be released in mid-March.

Today the WNBA announced that the Connecticut Sun have traded G Lindsay Whalen and the #2 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft to the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for G Renee Montgomery and the #1 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft. Both players were the #4 overall pick in their respective drafts (Whalen - 2004 and Montgomery - 2009) as well as the star of their college teams for 4 years (Whalen - Minnesota and Montgomery - Connecticut). Seems like a win-win for all parties involved as well as fans in both states. Thank you Roger Griffin and Chris Sienko (aka Mike Thibault)!!!

All-American Tina Charles outscored the Tar Heels all by herself in the 1st half with 25pts. as the Huskies held UNC to 24pts. No one scored in double figures for one of the highest scoring teams in the country for the last decade in women's college basketball. Also, the Huskies superb defense held them under 50pts. for the 1st time since 2004. With their 54th-straight annihilation (all by 10pts. or more, btw), the Huskies are now one win away from sitting all alone in 2nd place for consecutive victories behind UConn's record 70-straight from 2001-03.

UConn All-American Sr. C Tina Charles was named Big East Player of the Week for the second time this season today after averaging 21.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg while shooting 62.5% from the field, and helping UConn to 2-0 record last week including a 78-59 road victory over 12/11 Florida State and a 91-24 road victory against Seton Hall in their Big East season opener.
