It was bound to happen eventually, one of Geno's staff would leave for a head coaching position. The question was not If but When? and of course, Who? Well, it turns out it is Tonya Cardoza. She has been an assistant coach with the Huskies for 14 seasons and a part of all 5 NCAA Championships. Today she was officially named head coach of the women's basketball team at Temple University. At UConn, she specialized in recruiting and grooming the guards. She inherets a team from her former Virginia Cavaliers teammate Dawn Staley, who left who the head coaching position at South Carolina (the Huskies will visit the Gamecocks as part of their upcoming non-conference schedule). And I don't think it will be long until we see the Owls on the Huskies schedule.

Good Luck Tonya, we will miss you!!!

And now the question becomes who does Geno pick to take Tonya's place as UConn Assistant Coach???

USA Basketball (lack of) Update:

The deadline is tomorrow and still no official word on the final three roster spots and two alternates for the women's 2008 USA Basketball Olympic team. I wish they would get it together already. They claim the United States has the best talent in the world, well then why is it taking them so long to figure out who are the 12 (or 14) best (and now they really only need worry about 10-14th best) in the country. For me it is very easy: SF Tamika Catchings, PF Swin Cash, and PG Lindsay Whalen. My two alternates would be PF Taj McWilliams-Franklin and SG Alana Beard.

Saturday, May 31, 2008

Nine of the 12 members of the USA Olympic women's basketball team were named today. Former UConn stars PG Sue Bird and SG Diana Taurasi were named to their 2nd Olympic squad after having won gold medals in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Other UConn players vying for one of the three final spots are SF Swin Cash and PF Asjha Jones.

2008 USA Olympic Team:
SF Seimone Augustus, LSU
PG Sue Bird, Connecticut
C Sylvia Fowles, LSU
C Lisa Leslie, Suuthern Cal
PF Candace Parker, Tennessee
SG Cappie Pondexter, Rutgers
SG Katie Smith, Ohio State
SF Diana Taurasi, Connecticut
PF Tina Thompson, Southern Cal

Saturday, May 03, 2008

UConn added another player to its roster, but she won't play until the 2009-10 season. Washington transfer and New Zealand native 6'5 C Jessica McCormack has accepted the scholarship offer from UConn and committed to playing for the Huskies. She will have to sit out the 2008-09 season due to NCAA transfer rules. She made the decision final after playing the US Senior National team in the GOod Luck Beijing tournament in China where she is a member of the New Zealand National team that will play in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China in August.

Connecticut's Jr. PG Renee Montgomery and So. C Tina Charles are among the 12 finalists for the 2007-08 State Farm Wade Trophy announced today by the WBCA. Noticably absent from the final list of 12 is UConn's phenom freshman Maya Moore who is not eligible for the award based solely on the fact that she is a freshman. I would love to see that be the case in men's college basketball for a National POTY award and the kind of controversy that would raise, but it's only women's college basketball so we brush it under the rug (STUPID RULE....WBCA....REALLY STUPID!!!!). She is still eligible for the 2007-08 State Farm (formerly Kodak) All America Team though.

Moore was named Big East Freshman of the Week today for the Big East record 10th time this season after averaging 21.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.7 bpg, and 2.3 spg while helping UConn to a 3-0 record for the week (2-0 vs. Top 5)...BUT this time she was also named....Big East Player of the Week becoming the FIRST EVER freshman to take such honors on the women's side and becoming the the 1st male or female freshman to sweep both weekly awards.

The million dollar question will be answered this Friday at the Big East awards banquet...has she done enough to convince the other coaches in the Big East that she is the BEST Player (not just Freshman) in the Big East and should win the 2007-08 Big East Player of the Year award.

My list is down to TWO:
1. Maya Moore, UConn OR

And the NIGHTMARE known as the TORN ACL continues....

This time it is Sr. SG Mel Thomas who tore both her ACL and MCL in her right knee. Her career at UConn is OVER and I want to throw up...literally BIG CHUNKS. No surgery is set as of yet.

My heart breaks for Mel and her family and teammates. She optimized what it meant to wear Connecticut across your jersey. She played all out---all the time---and she will be missed, not only on the court but as a UConn Husky!!! We love you Mel and wish you a 150% fast and full recovery!!!
And we continue to wait on word regarding Mel's knee..........

6pm, 9pm........someone just tell us something but ONLY GOOD, PLEASE!!!!
Mel Thomas injured her right knee last night with two minutes to go in the game as the rest of the UConn Huskies fought off the pesky Orange of Syracuse to win 65-59. The extent of her knee injury will be determined after an MRI in done this morning in CT.

Moore was named Big East Freshman of the Week today for the 3rd time this season after scoring 21 pts and having 7 rebs, 2 asts, 1 stl and 1 blk while helping UConn defeat Hartford 70-24. What is so impressive is that in only 31 minutes, Moore ended the game only 3 points shy of Hartford's total for the game on 9-12 shooting (3-5 3pt).

Bad News: Greene is done for the season. She tore her right ACL during the South Carolina game and will have surgery on Friday. The only good news that came out of UConn today was that she is still eligible to redshirt this season and will have two years remaining when she returns. Our prayers go out to her and her family and we hope for a fast and full recovery.
