Today UConn So. G Bria Hartley and Fr. W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis were both named to the 2011-12 John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 20 list. Hartley is currently the third leading scorer for Connecticut averaging 14.9ppg and is second on the team in assists with 4.1apg. Named the Big East Preseason Freshman of the Year, Mosqueda-Lewis, has been stellar thus far in her young career as she currently is the second leading scorer for the Huskies with 15ppg and leads the team with 52 made 3-pters. Mosqueda-Lewis, one of two freshman on the Top 20, has brought home six Big East Freshman of the Week accolades.

Today UConn commit Breanna Stewart (Syracuse, NY) was named the 2011 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year. She becomes the 3rd Husky to win (Diana Taurasi '06, '10 & Tina Charles '09) and is now part of the impressive list of athletes (Leslie, Staley, Edwards, Miller, Holdsclaw, Augustus, etc.) who have won the award since it started in 1980. A member of the gold-medal winning 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team that competed July 21-31 in Puerto Montt, Chile, Stewart also played for the 2011 USA Pan American Games Team that competed Oct. 21-25 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

“It is exciting because this is a pretty big award,” Stewart said. “I’m just honored to be thought of as USA Basketball’s Female Athlete of the Year.”

“Breanna Stewart ranks up with Maya Moore as one of the most competitive young players that I've ever seen,” said Jennifer Rizzotti, 2011 USA U19 and University of Hartford head coach, and the 2011 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year. “She has the ability to tremendously impact the game on both ends of the floor. She works constantly to improve all aspects of her game, and I look forward to watching her growth as she develops into an even more complete player. Her desire to win and compete on every possession raised the level of intensity for our team and was crucial to our winning the gold medal.”

As the second youngest member of the 2011 USA U19 team, Stewart started in three of nine games and in just 19.9 minutes per contest, averaged team-highs of 11.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game to help the USA to an 8-1 record and gold medal at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship. Shooting 46.8 percent from the field (36-77 FGs), Stewart was named to the five-member All-FIBA U19 World Championship Team. In the USA women’s U19 record book, Stewart lists third for blocked shots (15) and fourth for rebounds (66). Among all participants in the 16-team field, she ranked second in blocked shots (1.7 bpg.), and 10th in rebounding (7.3 rpg.) and defensive rebounding (4.9 rpg.). As just the second U.S. high school girls basketball player to represent her country in Pan American Games history, Stewart was the only high school player on the 2011 USA Pan American Games Team, which included 11 collegiate athletes. Starting in all four games, Stewart led the team in scoring (15.3 ppg.), rebounding (11.3 rpg.), blocked shots (1.8 bpg.) and minutes played (27.8 mpg.) to help the USA to a 2-2 record and seventh-place finish. She shot 50.0 percent from the field (19-38 FGs) and 88.5 percent from the free throw line (23-26 FTs). Stewart compiled 18 points, four blocked shots and a U.S. Pan American Games record 21 rebounds in the USA’s opening game against Argentina. Stewart lists second in the U.S. Women’s Pan American Games Team record book for blocked shots (9), third for rebounds (45) and fourth in free throw percentage (.885). Among all participants in the 2011 Pan American Games eight-team field, Stewart ranked first in free-throw percentage (.885) and blocked shots (2.3 bpg.); second in rebounding (11.3 rpg.) and defensive rebounds (7.5 rpg.); third in field goal percentage (.500) and offensive boards (3.8 rpg.); and fifth in points (15.3 ppg.). As a junior at Cicero-North Syracuse High School in 2010-11, she led her team to a 22-3 record, the New York Section 3 and New York Class AA state titles. Starting in all 25 games, she averaged 24.3ppg, 11.5rpg, 3.0apg, 2.8spg and 4.2bpg. Thus far in 2011-12, she is averaging 24.2ppg has helped her team to a 12-2 record as of Jan. 26.

Additionally, USA Basketball will nominate Stewart for the U.S. Olympic Committee’s 2011 SportsWoman of the Year, which will be announced in 2012. The USA Basketball Board of Directors is responsible for selecting USA Basketball’s annual award winners.

“In her third consecutive summer playing for USA Basketball, Breanna was an important part of two USA teams,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball Executive Director/CEO. “Anyone who has seen her play knows what an incredible athlete she is, and how much fun it is to watch her play. G Bria Hartley chipped in 18pts. and 7asts. for the 3rd-ranked Huskies. Fr. C Kiah Stokes had a solid game off the bench adding 8pts., 7rebs., and 3blks. in a career-high 24mins. Doty, who left the DePaul game after playing just 2 minutes because her troublesome left knee swelled, did not play against Syracuse because of a minor bone bruise in the knee, but is probable for Saturday's game at home against South Florida. It was "Pack the House" night at the Carrier Dome with tickets set at $2 apiece, and among the school-record 4,357 fans was local star Breanna Stewart, the top prospect in the nation. The 6'4 Sr. F/C at Cicero-North Syracuse High School announced last February that she was headed to UConn, and she wanted a firsthand look at her future team.

The Connecticut women's basketball team is one of nine programs that have been selected by Nike to wear the new Nike Hyper Elite Platinum uniform this season. The Huskies will wear the uniform when it hosts Notre Dame at the XL Center on February 27, 2012 at 9pm on ESPN2. Each of the nine programs selected have won NCAA Championships in Nike apparel. In addition to the Connecticut women, the participating schools include the Connecticut men's team, Arizona, the Baylor women's team, Duke, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Syracuse. UConn is the only school to have both its men's and women's program as part of the deal. According to Nike, the "Nike Hyper Elite Platinum uniform is designed at the intersection of sustainability and performance. Nike created the uniforms specifically for superior performance and lower environmental impact. The fabric of the Nike Hyper Elite Platinum shorts are made from 100 percent recycled polyester while the jersey fabric is made from at least 96% recycled polyester. Both short and jersey are tailored for the optimal efficiency of movement and are five percent lighter than the previous Nike Hyper Elite uniform. Featuring laser-cut bonded logos, a sharp platinum design as well as prominent accent colors, the Nike Hyper Elite Platinum uniforms are sure to shine on the court."

Other aspects of the uniform include:
*Laser perforations in side panels for increased breathability and a lightweight 4-way stretch woven design on the short.
*A bonded hem detailing found on the short and the bonded back seam near the neckline to enhance comfort and style.
*A lightweight Nike Sphere fabric on the front.

UConn freshman W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the 6th time in her career after helping UConn to a 3-0 week including two wins over ranked teams and averaging 16.7ppg and 6.7rpg. Mosqueda-Lewis had 15 points, six rebounds and two assists in a win against 24/21 North Carolina on Jan. 16. Three days later, she had 10 points and seven rebounds against Cincinnati. In a win at 21/19 DePaul, she shot 62 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-7 performance from 3-point range, to lead the team with 25 points. She added seven rebounds and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Summary: Led by Fr. W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and her 25pts., UConn started the game on fire and it was over before the first timeout as the Huskies doubled-up DePaul, 88-44. What was supposed to be a tough game was quickly over as UConn shot 54% and recieved 18-1st half pts. from Mosqueda-Lewis. DePaul's leading scorer Jr. G Anna Martin, who came in averaging a team-high 19.2 points, missed all six shots and was held scoreless by the brilliant defense of Jr. G Kelly Faris (aided in the 2nd half by Fr. G Brianna Banks). About the only downer for the Huskies was Jr. G Caroline Doty leaving after playing just 2 minutes because her troublesome left knee swelled up. She's torn the anterior-cruciate ligament three times, so it probably wasn't too surprising that it acted up with the Huskies playing their fourth game in eight days.

UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma wasn't concerned, saying, "There's no alarm at all."

UConn freshman W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the 5th time in her career after helping UConn to a 2-0 week and averaging 14.5ppg, 5rpg and 3apg in a 2-0 week for Connecticut. She shot 50 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent from 3-point range. Against Providence on Jan. 10, she had 13 points, six assists, eight rebounds and two steals with just one turnover. In a win at Villanova on Jan. 14, Mosqueda-Lewis had 16 points, connecting on 6-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-5 from behind the arc while adding three steals.

Notre Dame then out-scored UConn 11-4 in the OT to give the Huskies their 2nd loss of the season winning by the score of 74-67. Notre Dame's All-American candidates Sr. G Natalie Novosel and Jr. G Skylar Diggins led teh way for the Fighting Irish with 20pts and 22pts., respectively while UConn was led by their All-American candidate So. Ice bags in the locker room told the story of his team's win over West Virginia much better than the stat sheet. Five players scored in double figures as UConn extended its NCAA-record home winning streak to 93 games. All-American candidate Sr. G Tiffany Hayes had 13 points, Fr. W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 12, and RJr. G Caroline Doty chipped in 11.

"There were a lot of knockdowns, a lot of takedowns in this game today," UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma said. "There is a lot of ice right now in the locker room."

On Thursday, arguably the Best Team in the History of Women's College Basketball will be inshrined in UConn History forever when they are inducted into the "Huskies of Honor" program. The 2001-02 undefeated National Champions will be recognized during halftime of UConn's game against Fairfield. The members of the 2001-02 team who will be in attendance for the "Huskies of Honor" induction ceremony on December 29 include: head coach Geno Auriemma, associate head coach Chris Dailey, graduate assistant coach Svetlana Abrosimova, athletic trainer Rosemary Ragle, team physician Tom Trojian, Sue Bird, Ashley Battle, Maria Conlon, Stacey Marron and Ashley Valley. In the victory against the Pirates, she recorded 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and made a trio of 3-pointers. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were picked to win 2011-12 Big East Conference Regular Season Title in a poll voted on by the league coaches today at Big East Media Day in NYC. For only the second time since the 1992-93 season the Huskies were not selected as the favorite in the Big East. Notre Dame narrowly edged out UConn as the favorite with 219pts. to UConn's 216. The other time was in 2005-06 when Rutgers was picked to finish first in the Big East. Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins was unanimously selected as the 2011-12 Preseason Big East POTY while Connecticut's Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was picked as the 2011-12 Preseason Big East FOTY. Due to a tie in voting, 12 players were named to the 2011-12 Preseason All Big East Team including Connecticut's Tiffany Hayes and Bria Hartley.

Today Coach John Wooden’s daughter, Nan Wooden, announced at the annual Wooden Award preseason tipoff luncheon that UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma will be presented with the 2012 John R. Wodden Legends of Coaching Award this coming April. Auriemma ranks as one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, with seven national titles, 12 Final Fours and four undefeated seasons, including 39-0 NCAA title-producing campaigns in 2009 and 2010. His all-time coaching record is 771-124 (.861/26 yrs), tops among active NCAA coaches and No. 2 all-time in win percentage. His all-time record in the NCAA tournament is an astounding 81-16 (.835/24 yrs.). Since Geno Auriemma arrived at UConn, all players who have exhausted their eligibility have graduated. He will coach the U.S. Olympic team next summer in London. UConn’s men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun was the Legends of Coaching winner in 2005; Connecticut is the only school with two recipients. Auriemma has coached the last three John R. Wooden Award women’s winners, Maya Moore (2009 and 2011) and Tina Charles (2010). Auriemma and Coach Wooden became linked in fans’ minds last year when Coach Wooden’s grandson, Greg Wooden, was on hand as the Huskies broke the Wooden-led UCLA consecutive win streak at 88 last December.

UConn men's and women's basketball programs will tip-off the 2011-12 season with First Night sponsored by People's United Bank on Friday, October 14th at Gampel Pavilion. Admission is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6 p.m. featuring an autograph session with both teams, followed by performances from the band, cheer and dance squads, introductions of the players and coaches, a dunk and three-point contest and ultimate prize giveaways. The show will end at approximately at 8 p.m. with a performance by the famous Simon Sez. There will also be surprise guest appearances by former UConn basketball greats.

Today former UConn 4-time All-American Maya Moore was named one of 30 finalists for the 2011 NCAA Woman of the Year award.The finalists have been chosen by a selection committee of representatives from various NCAA schools and conferences. This year a record 471 nominations were submitted for the award that will be presented later this fall. The Woman of the Year Award, now in its 21st year, honors female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academic achievement, athletic excellence, community service and leadership. The prestigious program also involves a community service initiative that gives honorees the opportunity to interact with each other and with young girls in the city of Indianapolis who look to them as role models. Every NCAA member institution is encouraged to honor its top graduating female student-athlete by submitting her name for consideration. Each conference assesses the eligibility of its members’ nominees and selects at least one student-athlete to represent the conference. To be eligible for the award, a female student-athlete must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2011 spring season, graduated no later than the end of the summer 2011 term and achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5. The NCAA recently honored 142 women representing NCAA athletic conferences and independent schools for their accomplishments. The selection committee will now narrow the Top 30 to three finalists from each division to form the Top Nine, which will be announced in early September. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will select the national winner from the Top Nine honorees. The 2011 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced during the Woman of the Year dinner in Indianapolis on Oct. 16.

The new look Huskies left today for their 10-day European Tour. They will play four games and do lots of sightseeing around Italy. Good luck and safe travels, girls (and guys)!!!! The one negative: Doty will continue to practice (as she recovers from knee surgery/recent knee sprain), but won't play in any of the games.

UConn will open the competition portion of their trip Thursday against the Dutch National Team in Rome (1:30 p.m. EDT). The Huskies will also meet the Italian Select team in Rome Friday (1:30 p.m.); the Saarlouis Royales in Florence Aug. 22 (noon); and the Nigeria National Team in Como Aug. 24 (TBA).

Today former UConn Great Maya Moore was named the 2010-11 Capitol One Academic All-American of the Year for ALL Division I sports (male and female). One of the greatest women's basketball players in NCAA history, Moore was selected as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for the University Division. She joins Rebecca Lobo, '95 as the second women's basketball player from UConn to be named as the Academic All-America of the Year for the University Division. She is also the fourth women's basketball player (Ruth Riley, '01 of Notre Dame and Stacey Dales-Schuman, '02 of Oklahoma). Moore, who graduated with a Sports Media and Promotion major and a 3.67 G.P.A., was the Academic All-America of the Year for women's basketball in the University Division as a junior and senior. When she repeated as the Academic All-America of the Year, she became the first University Division women's basketball player to repeat as Academic All-America of the Year. A three-time Capital One Academic All-America selection, she finished her illustrious career as the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA Division I history with 3,036 points. A four-time WBCA All-American first team selection, she led the University of Connecticut to a pair of national championships and four appearances in the NCAA Final Four during her career. She played in all 154 games of her college career and led UConn to a phenomenal record of 150-4. Named as the Most Outstanding Performer at the 2010 NCAA Division I Tournament, Moore was the winner of the Wade Trophy as the top women's basketball player in the nation three times. A native of Lawrenceville, Ga. who grew up in Jefferson City, Mo., she was the first freshman to be named as the BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2008. USA (U19) Gold!!!

Today UConn So. C Stefanie Dolson and Fr. W Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis each scored a game-high 15 points to lead Team USA to a 69-46 victory over Spain in the gold medal game of the FIBA U19 World Championship, which was played in Puerto Montt, Chile. Dolson and UConn So. G Bria Hartley have now won two gold medals (2010 U18 World Championship) while Mosqueda-Lewis has now won three (2010 U17, 2009 U16). Mosqueda-Lewis was 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-6 from long-range. She also snared eight rebounds and dished-out four assists for the red, white and blue. Dolson rounded out a solid tournament with a 5-of-8 performance from the floor and made five of her six free throw attempts. Hartley came into the game as the team’s leading scorer, but scored only three points to go along with three assists. UConn commit F Breanna Stewart led the U.S. in scoring (11.2ppg) and rebounding (7.3rpg) for the tournament and was named to the 2011 U19 World Championship All-Tournament Team. UConn commit F Morgan Tuck was also on the USA squad.

Here is how all 5 faired in the tournament overall (9 games):
* Stewart started 3 games and led the U.S. in scoring (11.2), rebounding (7.3), and blocks (1.7) and averaged 19.9 minutes.
* Hartley started all 9 games and was second on the team in scoring (11.1) and assists (3.2) and averaged 3.1 rebounds and a team-high 1.9 steals in team-high 24.8 minutes. She also shot team-high 43.2 percent (team-high 19-of-44) from 3-point range.
* Dolson started 6 games and averaged 9.2 points on 61.0 percent shooting from the field and 4.4 rebounds in 14.2 minutes.

Today UConn's trio of So. C Stefanie Dolson, So. G Bria Hartley and Fr. F Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis were named to the 2011 USA Women's U19 World Championship Team as announced by USA Basketball. They are also joined on the team by UConn commits F/C Breanna Stewart and F Morgan Tuck. The 12-member squad will reassemble July 11-15 for training at the USOTC, before the team travels to Chile for its final preparations. As the winner of the past three U19 World Championships, the USA will look to defend its title at the 2011 U19 Worlds, hosted by Chile from July 21-31 in Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas. The USA has been drawn into Group B for preliminary round play and will tip-off against Japan on July 21 (12:30pm ET), face Russia on July 22 (12:30pm ET) and close the first round against Argentina on July 23 (3:30pm ET). The second round will be played July 25-27, quarterfinals are slated for July 29, semifinals will be held on July 30 and the finals are scheduled for July 31.

Today UConn 4-time All-American Maya Moore has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in basketball, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in the sport for the second straight year. The Honda Sports Award is given annually to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports, along with automatic eligibility to become a “Top Three’’ finalist for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which signifies the Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year. She edged fellow nominees Brittney Griner of Baylor, Amber Harris of Xavier and Nnemkadi Ogwumike of Stanford in voting done by 1,000 NCAA member schools. Today UConn Sr. All-American Maya Moore also took home the 2010-11 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award as the most outstanding senior in the Class of 2011. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Moore was recently honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America as the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year. She is involved with Athletes in Action and has attended numerous leadership conferences through the organization. She is also a gifted musician. Moore has been involved with the Children’s Hospital, helping with a teleconference to raise money for sick children as well as visiting children several times. She also volunteered at head coach Geno Auriemma’s charity golf tournament and has helped the Salvation Army.

Today UConn Sr. Maya Moore became the most decorated player in the history of NCAA basketball (men's or women's for that matter) as she was named the winner of the prestigious 2011 State Farm Wade Trophy which is the highest honor in women's college basketball for the (record) third time. Moore has posted a 150-3 record at UConn. She has led the Huskies to an NCAA-record 90-game winning streak, four BIG EAST Championships and four NCAA Women's Final Four appearances. Sunday night her team continues its quest for a third national championship in a row, and eighth overall. While averaging 23.4ppg this season (19.7 points per game in her collegiate career), Moore became the Huskies' all-time leading scorer earlier this season and is only the seventh player in NCAA Division I women's basketball history to score at least 3,000 career points. She is one of only two players to be selected as a First Team All-American four times. She won the BIG EAST Player of the Year Award three times and was voted as the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament in 2010. Equally impressive is Moore's performance in the classroom. She recently was named BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Capital One University Division All-American of the Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America for the second-consecutive year. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native who sports a 3.7 GPA in an individualized major of sports media promotion, is a three-time Academic All-America pick.

Today Connecticut's Super Star Sr. W Maya Moore won her first National Player of the Year award of the season as she was again named the 2010-11 USBWA National Player of the Year. Today was named to the 2010-11 John R. Wooden All-American Team. She becomes only the 2nd player ever to be named to the Wooden All-American Team all 4 years of her career (joining Courtney Paris, Oklahoma). She becomes only the 7th player in the history of NCAA Women's D-I Basketball to eclipse the 3,000 point mark. Fr. Bria Hartley poured in 14pts., 6rebs, and 6asts. while Jr. Tiffany Hayes overcame first half foul trouble to chip in 11pts. and 5asts. Fr. Stefanie Dolson pounced back from a rough game Georgetown with 12pts. and 6rebs.
